IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of people who want to study or work in environments where English is the medium of communication.  It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English Language Assessment, and was established in 1989.

Scoring

The scoring of the IELTS test is done in the range of 0 to 9 bands. The higher the better. You are given such a score in each module (mentioned below) and an Overall score which is the average of your scores in the individual modules.

Exam Format

The test is divided into 4 modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

There are 40 objective type questions such as multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, match the following and such. These questions are divided into 4 sections with each section containing 10 questions and a separate audio. The purpose of the test is to listening to various audio files of conversations and answer questions. The questions are always in a sequence. The speakers in the audio will be speaking in the American, British and Australian accents primarily. The test lasts for 30 minutes and you will be given an additional 10 minutes to transfer your answer from the question sheet to the answer sheet. You are scored based on the number of questions you’ve answered correctly.

There are 40 objective type questions such as multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, headings, true/false/not given and such. These questions are divided into 3 passages with the pattern being 13-13-14; 13 questions after 1st passage, 13 questions after the 2nd passage and 14 after the 3rd and final passage. The purpose of the test is to read the passages and answer questions based on the passage. The average length of each passage is 1000 words. The test lasts for 60 minutes and you are required to transfer your answers to the answer sheet within this time limit. You are scored based on the number of questions you’ve answered correctly.

There are two tasks: Task 1 is Report Writing (Academic IELTS) or Letter Writing (General IELTS) and Task 2 is Essay Writing (for both Academic & General). You are required to write atleast 150 words for Task 1 and atleast 250 words for Task 2. The test lasts for 60 minutes. You are suggested to spend 40 minutes on Task 2 and 20 minutes on Task 1, but this is not compulsory. You are scored based on your performance and the judgement of examiners.

The test is divided into 3 parts: Part 1 is Introduction, Part 2 is Individual Long Turn/Cue Card and Part 3 is Discussion/Follow-Up. In the ‘Introduction’ section, you are asked basic questions with the intention of getting to know you better. In the ‘Cue Card’ section, you are given a random topic and are required to speak on the topic for 2 minutes after preparation of 1 minute. In the ‘Discussion’ section, you are asked questions based on the ‘Cue Card’ topic and require you to provide your opinion on the matter. The test lasts for 10 to 15 minutes. You are scored based on your performance and the judgement of examiners.

Exam Fees

The IELTS test is conducted by two organizations: British Council and IDP. Both organizations currently charge INR 14,000 for the test.

Score Validity

Your test results are valid up to 2 years from the date of the test.

IELTS Indicator

Exam Format

The exam format of IELTS Indicator is exactly the same as the main IELTS test, with the only difference being that it is conducted on a computer and can be given from the comfort of your home. The test is held once a week and you receive indicative scores for each module and an overall score within 7 days of the test date.

Scoring

The scoring for the test exactly the same as the main IELTS test and you are given scores between 0 to 9 bands.

Exam Fees

The exam fees for the IELTS Indicator test is US$149, which needs to paid online on the IELTS website.
